Boat taxis on Klong Saen Saeb
A vast network of canals or better known as khlongs gives Bangkok the alias, 'Venice of The East'. Used as highways in earlier days, today they remain a convenient form of traffic free transportation in Bangkok. The khlongs are incredibly polluted and getting on and off the boats is reserved only for the most limber.
The Saen Saep canal, the main khlong route, was built by the order of King Rama III during the dispute between Siam and Annam about Cambodia, to create transportation for soldiers and weapons to Cambodia. Construction was completed in 1840.
The 18-kilometre long route is operated by the Khlong Saen Saep Express Boat and provides quick, low-cost transportation, carrying about 60,000 passengers per day.
Riding the 'water-taxi' also provides a glimpse of everyday Bangkok life as many houses and shops line the khlong.
